What amazing workshops!!

Just had the privilege of supporting all day workshops at Ringmer and Priory led by Word Migrants and today at Peacehaven Youth Centre led by Nick Pilton, with guest visits from John Agard and Ros Barber and support from Tom Goudlen. Oh my goodness! What fun! What creativity! They are some of the best workshops I have ever been part of. Thank you all so much.

Here are some young people comments:

"That was awesome - so inspiring"

"I thought it was going to be boring as it involved writing, but it was great fun and I really enjoyed it"

"I thought it was good because I had never met someone who is so interested in words"

"I made a speech about the police and it was good because I have had past experiences and I felt something came out of it"

"I did art spray and it was good because you learnt new techniques"

FREE SPEECH!

Apart from discussing our responses to "What is a Festival" and "What does a Festival of Words conjure up", we also thought about and created responses to, the theme Free Speech! Some made poems, some performed, others had heated debates about what free speech means and should mean. Here are a few thoughts:

Free Speech > minority groups, anything you say, being posh, Mandela, labels, poems, gangster, civil rights, slang, songs, languages, Barrack Obama, expressing opinions, without prejudice, controversial issues, relationships, the right to listen, human rights, different ways of communicating, animal rights, protests, petitions, racism, homophobia, child abuse, negative words, rights for disabled, swear words, homeless people, change the system, war, things will never change, make a stand, believe in yourself and what you are talking about, free speech should be easy and is a right, opinions, confidence, improvise, only one side of an argument, come from the heart!

Music > clears your mind, allows you to express the truth and tell stories

Some poems by young people:

We don't know who to believe,
Who will even listen to us?
We wonder when the system is going to change,
But we know it won't without a large majority on our side.
We want the stereotypical view of us to change,
so teenagers can speak their views.
We don't need a book to be judged by it's cover
People who can make a difference stand back,
And nothing is done.
And we wonder will we be the same.

Free Speech is a form of expression
It's your own way of making an impression.

Free Speech makes you feel proud,
Stand on a stage and speak out loud.

Free Speech doesn't cost a penny
So say what you want and be heard by many.

Free Speech allows you to spread your word,
So come to this festival and make your opinions heard.

Marmite

Words are like marmite - you either love them or hate them!

You can't live without words

These are two comments from young people in the workshops so far. What do you think?

What does a Festival of Words conjure up?

Feedback from the first workshops includes:

riots.....conversations....songs....drama...boring.....signing
poems....art....graffitti...songs...raps...speeches...selling stationery....competitions against other schools...
games like scrabble...spellings...books...writing...imagination...cultural.....dulll

SO...we changed the name to just Free Speech!

AND...we thought about how to make the Festival more like the image of a festival as opposed to a Festival of Words!

What is a Festival?

Feedback from the first workshops includes:

music...fields and mud...tents....food and drink.....characters....balloons.....glowsticks......things to buy
performance......party.....fire.....costume......banners.....free stuff.....day out.......lots of people
laughter......stalls......money.....candy floss.....bouncy castles.....carnival......parades
re-enactments.....entertainment.....chance to participate and get involved in things
lights......fireworks......celebration.....themes......variety
smells....buzz of voices.....taste.....dancing.....prizes......exciting......colourful

The Poster!

Please leave your comments on the poster designs.

1. Which design do you prefer?
2. Can you explain why?
3. Would you pick up a leaflet with one of these designs on?
4. What age do you think the festival is for based on the designs?
5. Would you go to this festival?
6. Any other comments?

EAT YOUR OWN WORDS!

I think we should develop the idea from students at Peacehaven Community College into a whole stall called 'Eat Your Words' where you can buy, make and eat your own words.

Some foods they suggested were - spaghetti letters (perhaps images of previously made up words in spaghetti letters as badges for visitors?) , strawberry laces, fairy cakes, love hearts (apparently we can get our own made up?!)

Any other ideas?
We are currently in the process of selecting artists to work with the different groups of young people who are engaged with the Festival.
